Tutor | K-8 | The New Millennium Academy After-School Tutor Program offers a welcoming, structured, and engaging environment for all scholars. This year we have partnered with Great MN Schools, and Lavinia Group to implement a core focus of literacy in our After-School Tutor Program. Using, the Red Thread Curriculum, our K-4, will have a strong emphasis on phonics, ensuring a solid foundation for reading and language development. The curriculum provides enriching and inclusive decodable texts to enhance multicultural perspectives and center on authentic subject matter. In our 6-8 Curriculum, students develop content knowledge as they engage with diverse and rigorous texts, themes, and topics. They apply their learning through authentic and integrated literacy to develop as independent readers, writers, thinkers, and doers. Educators are focused on building strong reading foundations to equip young learners with the skills they need to become confident and proficient readers. | |
Hmong Dance | 3rd-8th | The Hmong Dance Program is a vibrant cultural initiative dedicated to showcase the beauty of Hmong culture through traditional and contemporary dance. Students learn traditional Hmong dances that reflect the stories, history, and values of the Hmong community. Students showcase their talents in community events, cultural festivals, and recitals, promoting pride and cultural awareness. The program fosters a sense of belonging and teamwork as participants collaborate and support one another in their shared passion for dance. | |
Breakdance | 3rd-8th | The Break Dance Program provides a lively and energetic environment to teach the foundations of breakdancing, also known as b-boying or b-girling. Scholars will learn the basics of breakdancing, including toprock, downrock, power moves, freezes, and techniques to refine style and creativity. Through dancing, scholars will take part in a supportive community of dancers, sharing knowledge, motivation, and mutual respect. This program provides a supportive and creative space to develop skills, confidence, and a passion for dance. | |
Qeej | 3rd-8th | The Qeej Program is a cultural preservation initiative dedicated to teaching and celebrating the traditional Hmong musical instrument, the qeej (pronounced “kheng”). This program is designed for individuals of all skill levels, offering an opportunity to learn, connect, and honor Hmong heritage through music and Hmong Language. Scholars will learn the techniques of playing the qeej, and explore the history and role of the qeej in Hmong traditions, particularly its importance in ceremonies, storytelling, and community events. By learning to play the qeej, participants help keep this unique tradition alive for future generations. | |
Paj Ntaub | 1st-8th | The Hmong Paj Ntaub Program focuses on teaching the art of Hmong embroidery, known as “paj ntaub” (flower cloth). Scholars will learn cross-stitching techniques to create authentic Hmong designs. Scholars will learn different symbolism behind paj ntaub patterns, which often reflect Hmong values, traditions, and stories. Scholars will have opportunities to display completed works at cultural events, exhibitions, and community gatherings, promoting pride and cultural awareness. This program is designed to preserve and celebrate the intricate craft that represents Hmong cultural identity while fostering creativity and a sense of community. | |
Batik | 4th-8th | The Hmong Batik Program is a creative and cultural initiative that teaches the traditional art of Hmong batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique used to create intricate and meaningful Hmong designs and symbols on fabric. Participants will have hands-on experience working directly with traditional tools, such as the “paj ntaub hemp” cloth and tjanting tool, to create their batik pieces. Scholars will learn the step-by-step process of Hmong batik, including using wax and indigo dye to create geometric patterns and symbolic motifs. Scholars will have opportunities to display completed batik pieces at cultural events, exhibitions, or community gatherings to share the beauty and significance of Hmong art. | |
Basketball | 5th-8th | The New Millennium Academy Sports program is designed to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and skill development in a supportive and fun environment. We provide an inclusive environment welcoming to beginners and experienced players. Athletes work on fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, and teamwork. The program promotes physical fitness and a love for basketball while ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience for all participants. This program provides an excellent opportunity for young athletes to build confidence, improve their game, and connect with peers. | |
Badminton | 5th-8th | The Badminton Afterschool Program is a fun and active program designed to introduce young players to the exciting world of badminton. Open to students of all skill levels, this program provides a supportive environment where participants can develop their athletic abilities, build confidence, and foster a love for the sport. Scholars will learn essential badminton skills, including proper grip, footwork, serves, smashes, and defensive techniques. The program caters to both beginners and experienced players. Athletes will practice skills in friendly matches and optional in-house tournaments to encourage healthy competition and sportsmanship. The program emphasizes building friendships, collaboration, and mutual respect among participants. |
